As the year draws to a close, we can look back at some of the amazing features and innovations we saw on smartphones.Keeping in mind all the reviews we did, this is ET’s selection of the best smartphones.
Best premium smartphone: Apple iPhone X (Rs 92,430); Runner up: Samsung Galaxy Note 8 (Rs 64,900)
Apple’s 10th anniversary special launch, the iPhone X impresses with the swanky new metal and glass design plus the 5.8-inch bezel-less OLED display. Add to that its superb dual camera setup and the futuristic Face ID unlock making it our choice for the premium smartphone of 2017.
Best compact phone: Apple iPhone 8 (Rs 66,120); Runner up: Google Pixel 2 (Rs 49,999)
The iPhone 8 is our choice for best compact phone because of the fantastic performance, best in class camera and the addition of wireless charging. Not to forget that since the design is unchanged, all existing accessories of iPhone 7 will work with it as well
Best budget phone: Xiaomi Redmi 4 (Rs 6,999); Runner up: Infinix Note 4 (Rs 8,999)
This one changed expectations for budget smartphones: A full metal unibody, HD display, fingerprint scanner and large battery — all of which makes the Redmi 4 our choice for the budget phone of the year.
Best large-screen phone: Samsung Galaxy Note 8; Rs 64,900; Runner up: Mi Max 2 (Rs 12,999)
The Note 8 has a gorgeous 6.3-inch super AMOLED infinity display with an aspect ratio of18.5:9. It’s got fantastic cameras, water proofing, wireless charging, great hardware and comes with the pressure sensitive S-pen.
Best selfie phones: Vivo V7+ (Rs 21,990) and Oppo F5 (Rs 19,990); Runner up: Gionee A1 Lite (Rs 14,999)
We have a tie in this category: the Vivo with its 24MP front camera and the Oppo with 20MP selfie camera deliver great results. Both have a 6-inch, 18:9 aspect display and overall excellent performance

The Pixel was our top choice for photos last year & Google has taken the top spot once again. The 12.2MP camera with laser + dual pixel phase detection autofocus, optical + electronic image stabilization and f/1.8 aperture delivers unbelievable photos.
Best video camera phone: LG V30+ (Rs 44,990); Runners up: Sony Xperia XZ Premium (Rs 61,990) and Samsung Note 8 (Rs 64,900)
LG V30+ is our choice for best video recording thanks to the 4k video recording, HDR support, 24-bit stereo sound recording and support for log shooting (usually found in DSLRs — allows for better post-production). In addition, the Cine Video modes offer pro-tuned options to add live video filters for superior results.

The Redmi Note 4 has sold millions of units in India already. The phone offers a fantastic full HD display, metal unibody, great performance, excellent cameras and good battery life. It’s still a steal at the asking price.
