76-year-old ALS survivor Stephen Hawking celebrates his birthday
76-year-old ALS survivor Stephen Hawking celebrates his birthdayALS is a disease that degenerates the nerve cells located in the brain that ultimately lead to fatality. However, the world-renowned scientist Stephen Hawking has fought with the disease for more than 55 years now. Hawkings was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis at the age of 21 following which his struggle for survival has been a roller coaster ride. He has successfully outlived most of the people that have been diagnosed with this degenerative disease.
The physicist was diagnosed with ALS in the year 1963 when the doctors predicted a maximum of 2 years for him to live. Surprisingly the genius surpassed the odds with a striking figure of 55 years which is way more than the maximum three years assigned to an ALS patient as stated by the ALS Association.
As reported by the NINDS (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Strokes, the long-lasting survival of Dr. Hawking was mostly due to the age at which he got diagnosed with the disease. ALS is diagnosed mostly in people between the age group of 55 and 75. However, Hawking got an earlier diagnosis at 21 which might be the reason he survived through the drastic changes reflecting in his body.
Another reason for this could be the genetic structure which might enable one to survive this motor nerve impairing disease. ALS is an incurable disease but numerous FDA-approved drugs can help increase the timeline by a maximum of six months. This does not provide any explanation for such a long-lasting survival by Dr.Hawkings.
Even as the disease dragged him down to a wheelchair while disabling his power to speak, Stephen Hawking has shown his passion for science through his genius theories conveyed through the means of a computer. He flaunts a long list of scientific achievements during and after his career when he was a professor at Cambridge University for more than 30 years. He is the writer of one of the most legendary books from the 20th century which was titled “A Brief History of Time” which contains everything starting from the Big Bang Theory to Black Holes.
